About

‘Who is this mysterious nit-picking young man roaming through foreign lands?’ I hear you ask… Well, ask no more! There are three components to my blog name, and I will explain each of them below:

A: This is fairly self-explanatory.

Pedant: During my year off prior to university, I was compelled to delve into the world of freelance proofreading as an experiment, and with the aim of setting up a little part-time earner. The story behind it is pretty comical, to be honest, in that I was asked (by an acquaintance who was studying at Durham University) to proofread his Masters thesis as a favour. [Ed.: I believe the actual terms were in return for a curry…] It just so happened that this student had taught me GCSE English, and had worked with me when I was editing the school newsletter. Oh, how the tables had turned! I quite enjoyed seeing my red annotations over my one-time teacher’s work. Maybe he didn’t, but nevertheless, I’d helped him to an improved standard of English and probably a better mark. He suggested there may be a market for my eagle-eyed proofreading among the hordes of students (both British and international) in the north-east of England, and the rest is history. I set up my website, and have since branched out into copywriting and translation alongside my proofreading.

Although my pedantry has mellowed somewhat, I am still disappointed when I see scenes such as this one in my everyday life... "ALL THESE YOGHURTS FOR JUST ONE KID?!"

Abroad: Now, those of you who know me will probably be happy to admit that I’ve never been the most adventurous. I get rather jealous when I read of my cousin Laura’s travels – I mean, I’m quite content to make an arse out of myself in public, but I often wish I was more inclined to hop on a plane and explore the world. Now’s my chance, I guess! I study Chinese, German and Dutch at Newcastle University, and I’m preparing to spend my third year abroad. You can read up on my more detailed plans here, and I hope to post at least once a week throughout the next 18 months to keep you all up to speed with my latest movements and funniest anecdotes. I’m also going to try and take a photo a day to tell the story of my year, so keep checking back, or sign up for email updates and receive my latest, direct to your inbox!
